Tips & Tricks For Dealing With Issues - The Walking On The Floor Exercise
While it may seem obvious based on the title, the Walking On The Floor technique is one of the more powerful tools you can have in your arsenal when it comes to dealing with issues. As such, it is usually the first thing we suggest people do in order to learn more about themselves, how they think, and more importantly - how they react.
In its most basic form, the Walking On The Floor exercise simply requires that you "announce" to yourself, in your own mind, everything you do as you do it. As an example (and as the name suggests)...
walking on the floor... walking on the floor... opening the fridge... bending down... opening the crisper... grabbing an apple... closing the crisper... closing the fridge... walking on the floor... going to the sink... turning on the water... washing the apple... turning off the water... walking on the floor... walking on the floor... eating the apple... walking on the floor...
While this may seem like a lot of work, it isn't nearly as difficult to do as it is to explain. In truth, your mind is already keeping track of all of these things. The only difference is that your mind has been programmed "not to keep track" of this information. By doing the Walking On The Floor exercise you're telling yourself that you now want to "pay attention" to all the things you do as you do them.
The great thing about this exercise is that you don't have to do it for very long to get the desired effect. It usually only takes a few days. What does tend to happen is you're mind will "forget" to keep track of what you're doing. After all, that's been it's default position for a long time. When you find yourself NOT keeping track of what you're doing - simply stop, take a breath, and resume the Walking On The Floor exercise from your current location.
The key things to remember are that you only have to keep track of things in your mind. You don't ever have to vocalize what your doing. You can if you want, you just don't have to in order to get results from this exercise. You also need to be willing to "see" everything you're doing - including the not-so-good things. That means "bitching out my wife", "pissed off at the boss", "yelling at the kids", or "pigging out on junk-food" are all ACCEPTABLE. If they aren't, then you are telling yourself that you are not allowed to be "YOU" and that means there is a massive dysfunction happening in your life.
So go, have fun, and do your best with the Walking On The Floor exercise. You may just discover something new about yourself that you never knew before.
